The Legend of Luke Kelly Joined by Christy Dignam in Vicar Street

On the 29th of January Covid restrictions had been relaxed and the long-awaited gig in Vicar Street could go ahead. Chris Kavanagh has been performing the music of Ireland’s most iconic balladeer, Luke Kelly for over twenty years, selling out shows around Europe. I’ve known Chris throughout that time and am delighted to be performing with the band for a while now including the lockdown period, so getting back out to perform was a thrill.

For the whole night the audience were on their feet singing with us. The atmosphere in Vicar Street was electric to say the least. Our special guest for the evening was Christy Dignam from the band Aslan. The audience were not aware who the guest would be until he was introduced. Christy had arrived just before the scheduled break in the performance, we had a brief chat and a quick rehearsal, Christy came on early in the second half. The crowd went wild, no one on stage could hear above the roar of the crowd. Christy had to wait in his usual, polite way, for the place to settle before he began. He sang The Sally Gardens, Waltzing Matilda, and finished with Crazy World.

Christy’s performance was the highlight of an already excellent show. It’s fair to say that the yearly, Legend of Luke Kelly concert in Vicar Street has to be experienced to be believed. If you love folk music don’t miss this event, it’s unforgettable.
